With the wet spring weather comes the risk of flooding – especially in certain parts of the country. The people behind the River Gauge Map project covered here previously have now added data about coastal water levels to their services, releasing CheckMyFloodRisk, to make it super-easy for anyone to calculate their distance from known flood risk areas (and subsequent flood risks from rivers and the sea). The site uses official Environment Agency data and works for any property or location in England (sadly other parts of the UK have no got open data so right now the service cannot work elsewhere). Overlaid on an interactive map, you input a post code or address, and automatically see your proximity to known flood risks, with greater pinpoint accuracy possible by dragging the ‘pin’ over any property or location. The risks (if any), and distance to the nearest flood zone is then automatically displayed.
Combined with the developer’s live flood warning system FloodAlerts and the live river/tide level gauge monitor, GaugeMap this completes a great suite of free-to-use products which put critical flooding information in the hands of everyone.
